Flunkey logo

Flunkey is a free, open-source voice dictation and AI assistant app for Windows 10 and 11. Hold a hotkey, speak, release — text appears where you work. F8 dictates anywhere, F9 answers in a side overlay, F10 rewrites what you selected.

Privacy by design

Bring your own keys — no accounts, no Flunkey servers, no analytics. Keys live in Windows Credential Manager under the Flunkey service, never in config files; the app fails closed if the vault is unavailable. History lives in local AppData (com.flunkey.desktop) until you wipe it in Settings → Wipe all data.

Requirements

Windows 10/11 64-bit, microphone, and WebView2. Cloud provider keys are optional: use on-device Whisper for speech transcription and Ollama for local AI tasks. All shortcuts are remappable; the tray icon jumps to any page.

Open source

MIT-licensed. Stack: Tauri v2 + Rust (global hotkeys, clipboard simulation, keyring, tray) + React 19 + Zustand frontend with three windows (main, overlay, pill). Issues and contributions are welcome — start with the README develop section. Contact: flunkeymanager@gmail.com.

Founder

Flunkey was built by Rohan Sharvesh — first as his own study tool, then shipped free for everyone like him. Read his story on the founder page.
