API Keys & Providers

Cloud providers use your own keys; on-device Whisper and local Ollama offer keyless options. Assign a provider and model to each task.

Picking a provider

Ollama	Local AI tasks	Connect to your configured Ollama server, normally on localhost; no cloud provider key is needed for requests sent there.

Cloud keys are optional

You can use local Whisper for transcription and Ollama for AI tasks without a cloud provider key. If you choose cloud providers, you supply their keys and may incur their usage charges under their terms.

OpenRouter has no speech-to-text

OpenRouter does not provide speech-to-text. Use an available speech-to-text provider or on-device Whisper for F8 transcription. For F9 screenshot analysis, the assigned model must support images.

Adding your key

Open Flunkey Settings → Providers → paste the key into the matching field → Save. Flunkey validates the key with a minimal request and shows a connected indicator. Keys take effect immediately; no restart needed.

Per-task routing

Models & Providers lets you assign providers and models by task: speech transcription, F9 Chat, F10 Transform, and cleanup. F10 has its own provider/model assignment. Local Whisper is an on-device transcription choice; Ollama can serve local AI tasks. Cloud slots use your configured provider keys.

Model discovery and selection

Model discovery: Groq’s model list is requested using your saved Groq key and contains no conversation content. OpenRouter’s searchable catalog is public; the catalog request does not include your chats. Catalog contents and model availability can change, so a fixed list on this page would not be complete or permanently current.

For image questions, select an F9 model that supports vision. A text-only model may still answer ordinary F9 questions but cannot analyze an attached screenshot.

How keys are stored

Keys live in Windows Credential Manager under the Flunkey service as groq_api_key, openai_api_key, gemini_api_key, and openrouter_api_key — never in config files, never in chat history. If the vault is unavailable, cloud actions that need those keys refuse to run rather than risk leaking secrets. Local Whisper and configured Ollama do not need those cloud keys.

Rotating & removing

Rotate at your provider dashboard, then paste the new key over the old one in Settings
To remove: clear the field in Settings and save — Flunkey deletes the vault entry
To remove app data locally: Settings → Wipe all data clears keys, history and screenshot attachments, downloaded Whisper models, the current clipboard, and preferences
